Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual so that their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
