Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own challenges can be handled in treatment.
