Offering gender-specific treatment services has proven worthwhile in situations where standard rehabilitation facilities have not meet expectations, for example dealing with situations inside a women's life which are unique and traumatic. Such concerns may relate to sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and motherhood, or another serious issues that are specific to women. Research has revealed that women could also become involved in substance abuse more easily than men, and are more predisposed to illness because of dependency problems than males as a result. Because of responsibilities in the home, women also tend to postpone searching for and undergoing treatment, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. That said, treatment services for women are created so that a women's needs would be the focus and priority. Just like coed programs, drug and alcohol treatment facilities which provide treatment services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a 1st step. After this step, counselors help women focus on both standard and gender-specific issues which may have brought about their drug abuse. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from their female peers, and a few centers which offer rehabilitation services to women offer client beds for her young children.
