Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their own challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
