Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular challenges can be treated in rehab.
