Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
