Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
