Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
