Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be remedied in treatment.
