Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual so that their unique problems can be handled in treatment.
