Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in treatment.
