Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own problems can be remedied in treatment.
