Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be treated in treatment.
