Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in treatment.
