Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person so that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehab.
