Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own personal problems can be addressed in treatment.
