Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own personal challenges can be handled in rehab.
