Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs.
