Sadly, it's true that tens of millions of people make the decision to operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This not simply puts one's life in danger and puts passengers among others at risk as well, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will typically result in serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases incarceration. Sometimes someone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse challenge. A legal court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation instead of other extreme consequences for his or her crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in alcohol and drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender might not exactly completely eliminate other penalties from the crime, but could decrease the seriousness of such consequences to a great extent. Particularly if the individual willingly takes part in alcohol and drug rehab and is a first time offender. Research indicates that a large proportion of individuals who do receive drug rehab for a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for comparable charges down the road.
