Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
