Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
