Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has proven worthwhile in situations where traditional rehabilitation settings have not meet expectations, like coping with situations in a women's life which can be distinctive and traumatic. Such issues may have to do with sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or other really serious issues which are particular to women. Research has revealed that women could also get involved in drug use more easily than men, and are more vulnerable to illness because of drug abuse issues than males as a result. Due to obligations in their home, women also tend to postpone trying to find and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. That said, rehab services for women are designed so that a women's needs would be the concentration and priority. Similar to coed facilities, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers which offer rehabilitation services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a starting point. After this step, counselors help women focus on both standard and gender-specific issues which may have brought about their substance abuse. Women also benefit from the constructive support from other female peers, plus some centers which offer rehabilitation services to women also provide client beds for their kids.
