Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
