Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has proven beneficial in situations where standard rehabilitation settings have fallen short, including dealing with situations in a women's life which are distinctive and traumatic. Such concerns may relate to sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or other serious issues which can be specific to women. Research has revealed that women could also become involved in drug abuse more readily than men, and therefore are more predisposed to sickness as a result of drug abuse problems than males as a result. Because of responsibilities in the home, women also tend to postpone searching for and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. With this in mind, treatment services for women are designed in order that a women's needs would be the focus and priority. Much like coed rehabs, alcohol and drug rehab centers that provide rehab services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women target both general and gender specific concerns who have prompted their drug or alcohol use. Women also may take advantage of the positive support from their female peers, and some programs that provide rehab services to women offer client beds for her kids.
