Sadly, it is a fact that tens of millions of people decide to drive an automobile while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing this not only puts one's life in danger and puts passengers at risk too, but being caught driving drunk (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually result in severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and in many cases prison time. Sometimes anyone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying substance abuse problem. The court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation rather than other extreme penalties for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eliminate other consequences from the crime, but could decrease the degree of such consequences to some great extent. Particularly if the person willingly participates in alcohol and drug rehab and is also a first time offender. Research indicates that a large proportion of people who do receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation because of a DUI/DWI offense avoid the courts for similar charges in the future.
