Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
