Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
