Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual so that their own problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
