Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may trigger substance abuse, or dangerous sexual behavior as a result of substance abuse may have caused the person to contract the sickness. People who have HIV/AIDS, either on account of their substance abuse or as a pre-existing condition before their drug abuse problem, often require treatment services tailor-made to fulfill their specific needs and challenges. A few of these challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS almost never care for themselves and take the proper medications they need to maintain their own health. Therefore, these individuals arrive to treatment in very poor health and this will have to be addressed as a priority whilst addressing other important issues. Aside from the obvious requirement to offer medical services whilst in rehabilitation, people with HIV/AIDS will also need to tackle deeper issues which prompted their drug or alcohol use. Often, people have conditions in their lives that are purely environmental which may have caused them to use drugs or alcohol, such as oppressive situations in their lives or negative relationships. These are the issues which treatment counselors will concentrate on in HIV/AIDS rehab services.
