Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Nonetheless, drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
