Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual so that their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
