Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own personal challenges can be treated in rehab.
