Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their own problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
