This is sometimes an extremely tough and painful way to live, and leads many LGBT individuals to a lifestyle of substance abuse to numb this pain. Someone who is LGBT may not feel safe in a conventional treatment program amongst individuals who aren't experiencing the same challenges they are experiencing in their lives. A LGBT center provides an environment which can be free of judgment, where LGBT clients can feel completely safe and comfortable revealing to their peers and rehab counselors issues which must be handled in order to get better. Rehab counselors within a LGBT rehab will help clients mend relationships with their family members, in case their loved ones disagree with their sexual choice as is usually the case. This situation is an extremely common trigger for substance abuse, and is an illustration of an issue that will be handled in treatment. LGBT clients often would like to be accepted in their lives, and rehab will help them accept themselves and build confidence to be able to lead a healthy life free of drugs and alcohol.
