Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each person so that their particular problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
