Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their particular challenges can be treated in treatment.
