Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be remedied in treatment.
