Unfortunately, it's true that millions of people make the decision to drive a vehicle while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not simply puts one's life at risk and puts passengers in danger as well, but being caught driving drunk (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will typically bring about severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and even time in jail. Often times somebody who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying substance abuse issue. A legal court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to provide DUI and DWI Offenders drug rehabilitation rather than other extreme penalties for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eliminate other penalties from the crime, but tends to decrease the degree of such penalties to some large degree. Specifically if the individual willingly participates in drug rehab and is a first-time offender. Studies show that a large percentage of people who do receive alcohol and drug rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for comparable charges later on.
