Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehab.
