Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own personal challenges can be handled in treatment.
