Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
