Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody so that their own problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
