Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
