Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal challenges can be addressed in treatment.
