Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person so that their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
