Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own problems can be remedied in treatment.
