Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may set off drug or alcohol use, or risky sexual conduct as a result of abusing drugs might have caused the person to contract the illness. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either due to their substance abuse or as a pre-existing condition prior to their drug use problem, often require rehabilitation services tailored to meet their specific needs and challenges. Many of these challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that drug users with HIV/AIDS hardly ever care for themselves and take the proper medicines they need to maintain their health. As a result, they arrive to rehabilitation in very poor health and this will have to be addressed as a priority whilst dealing with other important concerns. Aside from the obvious requirement to offer medical solutions during rehabilitation, individuals with HIV/AIDS must also address deeper issues which brought about their drug or alcohol use. Often, individuals have situations in their lives which are strictly environmental which may have triggered them to use drugs or alcohol, like oppressive conditions in their lives or detrimental relationships. These are the concerns which treatment counselors will focus on as part of HIV/AIDS treatment services.
