Dual diagnosis rehabs are programs which deliver rehabilitation to address both mental health and addiction concerns concurrently. Dual diagnosis is a very common situation for those involved with substance abuse, as individuals with mental health disorders often medicate themselves with drugs and alcohol to to feel some kind of short-term relief from their disorder. Within a dual diagnosis rehab, rehabilitation counselors will help people using a detailed rehabilitation plan all aimed at restoring and stabilizing mental, physical and emotional health while dealing with substance abuse issues. Providing a safe and secure setting is key so that dual diagnosis clients can feel at ease and remain free from distraction from things that may compromise their program and development. Treatment counselors will continue to work to spot environmental factors in the client's life such as negative relationships or other things that must be addressed in order for the person to remain mentally healthy and abstinen t once they depart dual diagnosis rehab. Dual diagnosis clients also benefit from behavioral treatment which will help them develop more efficient coping mechanisms so they are better able to handle life situations well when they depart dual diagnosis rehab rather than turning to alcohol and drugs as an inferior solution.
