Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
