Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
